General description
Glucose/dextrose is a carbohydrate compound or an aldohexose, present in humans. It is used as fuel by cells. Glucose consists of six carbon atoms and an aldehyde group. This monosaccharide can exist in an open-chain (acyclic) and ring (cyclic) form. It plays an important role in animal metabolism. Glucose, a major product of photosynthesis, participates in cellular respiration to generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide).
Application
D-(+)-Glucose has been used:
• as a component of Tris-glucose-EDTA (TGE) buffer for the preparation of bacterial DNA
• in the preparation of peptide dilution buffer (PDB)
• in the preparation of M17 broth medium
• in the preparation of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) buffer, used in phosphate calcium transfection
